Crawley Down Gatwick FC - the community club

Crawley Down is a small village in West Sussex near Gatwick Airport, with a church, a school, and most importantly, a football club. Crawley Down Gatwick FC is currently in the first division of the Sussex County Football League (Sussex County League Division 1 Level 5 also regarded as Senior B Level). The Anvils’ home ground is at the Haven Sportsfield, situated at the heart of a real town, with a real community, and surrounded by true local supporters. The club even extended their community by changing their name and crest to include ‘Gatwick’ and the fans living there.

The origins of the club can be traced back to 1983, and they became fully established in 1993. This club really lived the ‘pyramid dream’, because in just 20 short years, they catapulted themselves from parks football to county league level. As with other non-league clubs, the ups and downs of a season are quite different to those faced by a Premier League club, which adds to the charm of this level. Crawley Gatwick Down FC has literally had to deal with the elements to get where they are now. Terrible weather that waterlogged the pitch and postponed the games over the winter, kept the fans away and lost them ticket sales and other much needed revenue. A much slogged over promotion to division one was denied to them. Not by problems on the pitch however, but due to rejection by the local council to build floodlights at the ground, which is a league stipulation for clubs in that division. These types of ups and downs though are ones that can be overcome by the fans coming together to help, not the multi-million worries of the top flight clubs where a helpless fan can do nothing but watch. This is a team heavily reliant on its youth system to bolster the top team when players have to leave, giving another example of how support comes from the grassroots. Crawley Down Gatwick FC is a great example, and perhaps even an explanation of why football is in the DNA of so many people. When a club is the heart of a community, locally built and run, where the fans come first and they repay the welcome two-fold, when you’re raised up in a place such as Crawley Down, then it is part of you like DNA.
