1993 saw the beginning of the J League, Japan’s professional football league. It was almost exactly 20 years later, that she, a huge football fan from the home of football, and him, a huge fan of his local professional football club Kyoto Sanga F.C., met on a futsal court in Kyoto. They became footy mates, and began touring the stadiums of Japan together. Sharing tales of football culture and driving the length and breadth of Japan to take in the stadiums for the pure love of watching a game, they began to think more about the role that football clubs play in their local area. It also occurred to them that perhaps this could be how they could earn their bread and butter. With this plan in mind, it was time to get in touch with the roots of football culture.
日本でJリーグが始まったのが、1993年。
それから約20年が経った2012年に、フットボールの本場であるイングランドから日本の京都にやってきたフットボ−ル狂の女性と、地元京都のクラブを応援する日本人がフットサルで知り合い、その仲間達と一緒に地元のスタジアムへ通うようになった。
仲間たちとお互いの国のフットボールカルチャーについて語り合い、日本各地のスタジアムを巡り旅をすることで、試合を観て楽しむだけのことから、フットボールクラブの地域における役割について考えるようになり、またそれは、日常と切り離して考えることが出来ないことに気付いた。
As I was heading all the way to Sussex, I needed to find a club to call my own. Having been a long-term fan of anything connected with airports, it was with great luck that I happened across the perfect match - Crawley Down Gatwick FC. Just a stone’s throw away from Gatwick Airport, and the crest actually contains an aeroplane. So on the 28th December 2013, we took our rental car off to the away game against Eastbourne Town FC at Saffrons Park.
Completely and utterly different to the giant glaring signboards of Japan that resemble an American roadside, we drove along the rich green gentle hills of Seven Sisters, overlooking the magnificent cliff tops. There stood Saffrons Park, blended in amongst the tranquil surroundings of Eastbourne. Finally the time had come to get down to the grass roots of football in the birthplace of the sport itself.
早速、ルーツとも言えるイングランドのフットボールカルチャーに触れるべく、ブライトン、サセックス地方にある8部相当のRyman League division one southに焦点をあてた。
せっかく試合を観るなら、自分が応援したくなるクラブを見つけたいと思い探していたところ、自分は空港が好きであることから、たまたまガトウィック空港の近くに拠点を置くCrawly down gatwick F.C.を見つけ、2013年12月28日、アウェイゲームが行われる、Eastbourne Town F.C.の本拠地があるSaffrons parkへクルマで向かった。
アメリカのロードサイドを思わせる巨大で派手な看板や建物が国道沿いに並ぶ日本とは全く違う、
緑豊かでなだらかな丘とセブンシスターズの美しい海岸が織りなす素晴らしい風景の中のドライブを堪能し、たどり着いたイーストボーンの街は、とても落ち着いた雰囲気の街で、その街並みに溶け込むような形で存在するサフロンパークの雰囲気に、いよいよ本場のGrass roots footballに触れることが出来ると思い、興奮が抑えられなかった。
At the centre of my excitement and curiously was the actual ground and club house, and the role they played as the hub of the community. The sign board at the gate didn’t just say ‘football club’, there were also the names of the other clubs and teams, such as the local cricket club, that used the facilities and were connected by this facility. After stopping the car near the ground, and waiting for the game to kick-off, it became clear however, there was no game about to kick-off. After a couple of taps on the smartphone, there it was - the cancellation announcement due to the flooding over the Christmas period.

興味の中心はやはり、そのグラウンドやクラブハウスが、地域のコミュニティの中でどういった役割を果たしているのか、どういった存在なのかである。入り口の看板には、フットボールクラブだけでなく、クリケットなどの各種球技のチームのホームであることもわかるよう名前が載っており、様々な人を繋ぐ役割を果たしていることがよくわかる。
グラウンドの近くにクルマを止め、試合が始まるのを待ってはみたものの、なかなか始まらない。たまりかねてポケットから取り出したiPhoneで試合の情報を調べると、なんと延期…
その理由は、クリスマス以降、イングランド南部に大きな洪水被害をもたらしている大雨の影響だった。
