Non-league soul football

My dad’s team was one of those hundreds of teams located right at the base of the pyramid, in the non-league end of the system. But however much distance there is between your team and those in the top four professional levels, there’s always hope to narrow that gap thanks to the pyramid system. With dedication by the club, support of the fans, along with a little luck, there really is the possibility of getting promoted into the top four tiers of the pyramid and make it at the professional stage. If you really want to dream, even the Premier League is technically possible.

These dreams and hopes are probably part of the reason why the local community gets behind its local club. We all had to start somewhere after all. But there are a multitude of reasons that aren’t so ‘day-dreamy’ that keep the supporters dedicated to their ‘family’ and continue to attract new fans. Watching a non-league game at a ground opens your eyes to an under appreciated category of football. In comparison to the top professional levels, of course we’re talking about a different level of technique, fitness, and style, but you won’t be disappointed. You have to think about it as a different type of football to what you find at the upper levels of the pyramid, but one to be enjoyed and appreciated in a different way also. The action is raw and full on from start to finish, complemented by the good humour and nature of the referees. There are the highly creative chants of the crowd against the opposing team, and at times the team they’re actually supposed to be supporting too. Then there is the welcome of the club house and its hot cuppas and pies at half-time, to be enjoyed whilst being surrounded by bantering fans.

There is a ‘real’ feeling about it, where everyone in that ground plays a part in the club’s success, from the players and their ball skills, the tea ladies providing hot brews, ground staff welcoming visitors and locals alike. Non-league clubs are often located in small towns and villages, and exist in real towns with real communities, surrounded by beautiful scenery and historic heritage. Even as a visitor or an away team supporter, there is so much to enjoy by going to the grounds dotted around the countryside. If you really want to sample English football, go to the roots, where real local fans are. Share a drink and a bit of banter, take in a game, and immerse yourself in this atmosphere that has true character and individuality at each ground.
